Pelikonsoliemulointi, known in English as video game console emulation, refers to the practice of using software to recreate the functionality of a video game console on a different platform, most commonly a personal computer. This allows users to play games originally designed for consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, PlayStation, or others on their modern hardware.

Emulators work by translating the console's machine code and hardware instructions into commands that the host system's processor can understand and execute. They also emulate other essential components of the console, such as the graphics processing unit (GPU), sound processing unit (SPU), and input/output devices. This complex process enables the host system to behave as if it were the original console, running the game software without modification.

The legality of game console emulation is a nuanced topic. While the emulators themselves are generally considered legal, the distribution and possession of copyrighted game ROMs (Read-Only Memory files containing the game data) are typically illegal unless the user owns a physical copy of the game. Many emulator developers focus on creating their software without using any proprietary code from the original consoles, often relying on reverse engineering and publicly available documentation.

Emulation has become a popular way for gamers to preserve and access classic titles, especially as original hardware ages and becomes difficult to maintain.
