Particlecut

Particlecut is a general operation used in particle-based data workflows to extract a subset of particles from a dataset or simulation according to defined criteria. It is applied in fields such as physics simulations, computational chemistry, and scientific visualization, where large numbers of particles are tracked individually.

A particlecut is defined by a filter that assigns each particle a boolean selection. Criteria may be spatial (points within a bounding box, sphere, or plane), property-based (velocity above a threshold, mass range, charge, energy), timing (specific time step), or topological (membership in a detected cluster). Multiple criteria can be combined with logical operators, and the selection may evolve over time in dynamic simulations.

Implementation typically involves either straightforward per-particle checks or accelerated queries using spatial data structures such as kd-trees, octrees, or uniform grids. In visualization and in-situ analysis, particlecuts are implemented as streaming operators that prune or mask data on-the-fly to reduce memory usage and I/O.

Applications include reducing data volume for rendering, focusing analysis on regions of interest, computing localized statistics, extracting sub-systems for targeted computation, or preparing boundary conditions in simulations. It is commonly used in astrophysical N-body studies to isolate halos, in fluid simulations for boundary layers, and in molecular dynamics for selecting solvent or solute subsets.
