Parallellettalevyä, commonly known as parallel plates, refers to a fundamental electrical component consisting of two conductive plates separated by an insulating material. This arrangement is often used to construct a capacitor, a device that stores electrical energy in an electric field. The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor is determined by the area of the plates, the distance between them, and the dielectric constant of the insulating material, often called the dielectric.

When a voltage is applied across the plates, electric charges accumulate on each plate, with positive charges on one and negative charges on the other. This separation of charge creates an electric field in the region between the plates. The dielectric material influences the strength of this electric field and, consequently, the capacitor's ability to store charge. Different dielectric materials, such as air, mica, or ceramics, offer varying levels of insulation and dielectric constants, leading to different capacitance values for the same physical dimensions.

Parallel plate structures are crucial in various electronic circuits and devices. They are used for filtering, energy storage, timing circuits, and as components in resonant circuits.
