PPT

ppt commonly refers to Microsoft PowerPoint, a presentation program that is part of the Microsoft Office suite. The term also designates the file formats used by PowerPoint presentations, with the extensions .ppt for the older binary format and .pptx for the newer Office Open XML format introduced in 2007. A PPT or PowerPoint presentation is a collection of slides that can contain text, images, charts, audio, video, and animations, organized for sequential viewing.

PowerPoint originated with Forethought, which released it in 1987 for the Macintosh. Microsoft acquired Forethought later that year and integrated PowerPoint into Windows-based Office by 1990. Since then, it has become a widely used tool for business, education, and conferences, evolving with cloud and collaboration features in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

Features include slide layouts, templates, themes, and slide masters, as well as transitions, animations, embedded multimedia, charts, and hyperlinks. Modern editions support speaker notes, comments, real-time collaboration, and version history. The .ppt format was dominant for versions prior to 2007, while .pptx offers a more open, XML-based structure, smaller file sizes, and better data recovery.

Formats and compatibility: PowerPoint files can be saved in various formats, exported to PDF or video, and opened by other programs such as Google Slides or LibreOffice Impress, though some formatting or features may not translate perfectly. Macros, when used, are stored in .pptm files in newer versions.

Usage: It remains a standard tool for presenting information in business, education, and training, with online and mobile variants providing cloud-based editing and viewing capabilities.
