Forethought

Forethought is the cognitive process of considering potential future events and their consequences to guide present actions. It involves anticipating needs, risks, and outcomes, and often includes setting goals, evaluating options, and planning sequences of steps. Forethought can improve decision quality by aligning actions with long-term objectives and by allowing time for information gathering and problem solving.

Etymology: The term combines fore- "before" with thought, and has been used to describe premeditation in both everyday and legal language. In law, actions undertaken with forethought are often described as premeditated, indicating deliberate planning before an act.

Cognitive science: Forethought overlaps with prospection, prospective memory, and executive function. It supports delayed gratification, risk assessment, and scenario planning, but is subject to biases and errors such as optimistic bias or the planning fallacy.

Applications and limits: In daily life, forethought underpins routines, financial planning, and project management. It is not a guarantee of successful outcomes, since unforeseen factors can still arise. It can also be burdensome if excessive planning delays action.
