Impress

Impress is the presentation program within the Apache OpenOffice and LibreOffice office suites. It is used to create and present slide-based presentations, offering tools for text, images, charts, and multimedia.

Origins: Impress originated as the presentation component of StarOffice; it became part of OpenOffice.org, then Apache OpenOffice after the software project moved to the Apache Software Foundation. LibreOffice, a separate project created by The Document Foundation, also includes its own implementation named Impress, continuing the OpenDocument-based workflow.

Features: Impress provides slide-based authoring with master slides and templates, supports slide transitions and object animations, drawing and layout tools, and the ability to embed media. Presentations can be viewed in slideshow mode, and in the slide sorter view for ordering. It supports outlines, speaker notes, and exporting to formats such as PDF and various image formats. It uses the OpenDocument Presentation format (.odp) as its native format but can import and export Microsoft PowerPoint formats (.ppt, .pptx) for interoperability.

Usage: It is commonly used in educational, nonprofit, and business contexts as part of free/open-source office suites.
