PLCsystemer

PLCsystemer is a term used to describe systems based on programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial digital computers adapted for the control of manufacturing processes, machinery, and building systems. PLCsystemer integrate hardware and software to monitor inputs, execute control logic, and drive outputs in real time.

Typical components include the PLC processor (CPU), memory, input/output modules, power supply, operator interfaces, and communication modules. Software components comprise the control program—often developed with IEC 61131-3 languages such as Ladder Diagram, Function Block Diagram, Structured Text, Instruction List, and Sequential Function Chart—and configuration tools for I/O and networking. Modern PLCsystemer support embedded diagnostics, remote programming, and cybersecurity features.

Applications span discrete and continuous manufacturing, robotics, packaging, material handling, water and wastewater treatment, energy management, and building automation. They are valued for reliability under harsh conditions, deterministic control, modularity, and ease of integration with supervisory systems like SCADA and MES.

The PLC concept emerged in the late 1960s to replace relay-based control panels; subsequent decades saw increases in processing power, communication options (fieldbuses, Ethernet/IP, Profinet), and software capability. Industry standards, notably IEC 61131, guide programming and interoperability.

Design considerations for PLCsystemer include real-time performance, safety integration (SIL/CAT), redundancy, maintainability, and cybersecurity. Ongoing trends emphasize edge computing, tighter IT/OT integration, and use of standardized industrial communication protocols to support Industry 4.0 initiatives.
