PDF/X-4 is a standard from the ISO 15930 family designed to ensure reliable print production from PDF files. It provides a framework for exchanging PDFs intended for commercial and packaging printing, setting requirements that help printers reproduce color and layout consistently while allowing modern PDF features.

Key features of PDF/X-4 include support for live transparency and optional content (layers) within the PDF, along with embedded fonts and ICC-based color management. Files must include an output intent that specifies a color profile, enabling predictable color rendering across devices. By permitting transparency and layered content, PDF/X-4 adapts to contemporary design workflows while maintaining prepress discipline through embedded fonts and defined color management.

PDF/X-4 is widely used in prepress workflows and is supported by many modern printing pipelines and RIPs. It is considered more flexible than earlier PDF/X-1a variants because it preserves certain design features that are common in today’s PDFs, such as transparency and layering, rather than flattening them. The standard remains suitable for a range of print applications, including commercial printing and packaging, where accurate color reproduction and predictable output are essential.
