Overthewing

Overthewing is a term used in aviation to describe the aerodynamic state where an aircraft's wings are positioned above the main fuselage or body. This configuration is also known as high-wing. Aircraft with an overthewing design typically feature the wings mounted on the upper section of the fuselage. This arrangement offers several advantages, including improved ground clearance for propellers or engines, which is particularly beneficial for bush planes operating on unimproved airstrips. The high wing can also provide a more stable platform, especially in turbulent air, and can contribute to better visibility for the pilot and passengers looking downwards.

Examples of aircraft that commonly feature an overthewing design include many types of light utility aircraft, cargo planes, and some historical military aircraft. The placement of the wings above the fuselage can also influence the aircraft's handling characteristics, often leading to a more docile and forgiving flight behavior. In some cases, the wing's position can also facilitate easier access for maintenance or cargo loading due to the clearance it provides from the ground.
