Orbi

Orbi is a brand of home and small office mesh Wi‑Fi systems developed by Netgear. A typical Orbi system consists of a main router and one or more satellite units that together create a single, seamless wireless network. The satellites communicate with the router over a dedicated backhaul radio, separating inter-satellite traffic from client data to improve throughput and reduce congestion.

Originally released in 2016, Orbi introduced a consumer-friendly mesh alternative to traditional Wi‑Fi extenders. Netgear has since expanded the lineup with multiple generations and form factors. Early kits such as RBK50 paired with RBS50 used a tri‑band design with a dedicated backhaul. Newer models include Wi‑Fi 6 variants (for example RBK752, RBK852) and the Orbi Pro line for business use. Model naming typically uses RBK for the router and RBS for satellites.

Key features commonly offered across Orbi systems include guest networks, parental controls, and app-based setup via the Orbi app, which also supports network management and diagnostics. Many models provide roaming between nodes as devices move through a space, and security features such as WPA2 and, on newer hardware, WPA3, along with regular firmware updates. Availability of features can vary by model and region.

In typical installations, a two‑piece kit can cover several thousand square feet, while larger homes may require additional satellites to maintain strong coverage throughout.
