Neurotrichus

Neurotrichus is a monotypic genus of shrews in the family Talpidae, meaning it contains only one species. That species is Neurotrichus gibbsii, commonly known as the shrew mole. This small mammal is found in the Pacific Northwest of North America, inhabiting moist forests and woodlands.

The shrew mole is unique among moles for its relatively small size and its more active, shrew-like foraging behavior. Unlike many other moles that spend almost all their time underground, Neurotrichus gibbsii is often seen on the surface, foraging for insects, earthworms, and other invertebrates. It possesses both mole-like features, such as reduced eyes and velvety fur, and shrew-like characteristics, including a pointed snout and a slender body.

Its distribution spans from southwestern British Columbia in Canada down through Washington and Oregon, and into northwestern California in the United States. They prefer habitats with abundant cover and moisture, such as near streams and in dense undergrowth. Reproduction typically occurs in spring and summer, with litters of around 2 to 4 young.

The shrew mole's ecology is intertwined with the forest floor ecosystem. It plays a role in controlling insect populations and serves as prey for various predators including owls, snakes, and larger mammals. Despite its somewhat specialized niche, Neurotrichus gibbsii is considered to be of Least Concern by conservation organizations due to its relatively widespread distribution and stable populations.
