NVMeSSDer

NVMeSSDer (NVMe Solid State Drive Detector) is a cross‑platform software utility that allows system administrators and end users to detect, inventory, and monitor NVMe solid‑state drives on a computer. The tool was originally developed by the open‑source community in 2019 and has been maintained by a volunteer team of hardware engineers and software developers. NVMeSSDer is distributed under the permissive MIT license and is available through the official project repository on GitHub, as well as the Debian and Fedora package collections.

The core functionality of NVMeSSDer is to enumerate all NVMe devices present in a system, presenting attributes such as model number, firmware revision, serial number, capacity, and PCI bus location. When run in verbose mode, the program also displays vendor identifiers and controller specifications. For performance diagnostics, NVMeSSDer includes a built‑in benchmark routine that measures sequential write throughput, read latency, and command queue depth. Additionally, the utility is capable of querying SMART attributes and reporting health metrics such as temperature, erase cycles, and cumulative write. This data can be exported to CSV or JSON formats for integration with monitoring dashboards or log management systems.

NVMeSSDer supports Linux, macOS, and Windows operating systems. On Linux it interfaces directly with the NVMe subsystem via the /dev/nvme* devices and the NVMe subsystem utilities. On Windows the tool relies on the Storage Management API and is compatible with Windows 10 and later. macOS support is provided through the IOKit framework.

The project has an active mailing list and issue tracker, and the developers encourage contributions in the form of bug reports or pull requests. While NVMeSSDer is well‑documented, it requires a minimum of kernel version 4.7 on Linux for full feature support due to dependencies on the NVMe subsystem's sysfs entries.
