Mutationbased is an adjective used to describe methods, models, or systems that rely on mutation as the primary source of variation. The term is not tied to a single discipline and is used across biology, computer science, and evolution-focused research to contrast mutation-driven approaches with those that emphasize recombination or selection alone.

In biology and genetics, mutation-based approaches study how heritable changes in DNA influence traits and fitness. Mutations can be spontaneous or induced and may be point changes, insertions, deletions, or larger rearrangements. Mutation-based models help explain rates of evolution, adaptation to environments, and the maintenance of genetic diversity. They are also central to techniques that create genetic variation for breeding and research.

In software engineering, mutation-based testing introduces small code changes, or mutants, to evaluate the effectiveness of a test suite. Each mutant represents a potential fault; if tests fail to detect the change, the suite may need improvements. This form of testing is used to gauge coverage, debug potential weaknesses, and guide test optimization.

In evolutionary computation, mutation-based algorithms rely primarily on mutation operators to generate new solutions, sometimes with limited or no use of crossover. They can be effective in changing complex or rugged search spaces and are common in dynamic environments. Tuning mutation rates and operator design is important to balance exploration and convergence.

Limitations of mutation-based approaches include the risk of disruptive edits, slow convergence, and sensitivity to rate settings. They are often complemented by recombination, selection pressure, or other diversification methods.
