Multitouch displays are interactive surfaces that detect and track more than one touch point on a display area at the same time. They support gestures such as pinch-to-zoom, rotation, and multi-finger swipes, enabling natural input and more complex control schemes compared with single-point touch.

The most common technologies are projected capacitive sensors, which use changes in an electrostatic field through a transparent layer to locate touches. They support many simultaneous contact points and are resistant to wear. Other approaches include infrared touch frames, where the display is surrounded by an IR grid that detects finger positions by interruption of infrared light, and optical systems using cameras. Resistive touch technology exists but traditionally provides single-point input or limited multi-touch in specialized configurations and is less common on modern high-end displays.

A multitouch display typically presents touch events to the operating system as standard input, enabling gestures and handwriting recognition depending on software support. Performance is influenced by sensor resolution, sampling rate, latency, and calibration. Larger displays may require calibration to maintain accuracy, and there can be issues with parallax and occlusion when the touch surface is not perfectly aligned with the image.

Applications span consumer devices such as smartphones and tablets, public kiosks and point-of-sale terminals, tabletop and industrial control panels, and automotive and avionics displays. They enable intuitive manipulation of images, maps, and user interfaces without separate peripherals.

Design considerations include durability and glass protection, glare and fingerprint resistance, and manufacturing cost. New trends focus on higher touch-point counts, better haptic feedback, seamless integration with display panels (in-display sensors), and improved reliability in varied lighting conditions.
