Multidesktop

Multidesktop is a term used to describe a setup that provides multiple distinct desktops or workspaces either on a single computer or across a networked environment. Each desktop presents its own set of running applications, windows, and settings, allowing users to organize tasks by context or project. The concept is related to virtual desktops and desktop virtualization but emphasizes the coexistence of several independent desktop contexts rather than a single augmented workspace.

In practice, multidesktop can be implemented in several ways. Desktop environments in modern operating systems typically offer multiple virtual desktops or workspaces that users can switch between. In addition, multi-seat configurations enable several users to interact with different desktops on the same physical machine, often using separate input devices. In enterprise or education settings, desktops may be delivered as virtual machines or remote sessions (VDI), providing isolated desktops that run in the datacenter or cloud while presenting to the user as independent workspaces.

Key considerations include performance, resource allocation, security, and isolation. Independent desktops may each maintain separate user profiles, permissions, and configurations, and may even use distinct network contexts. Managing consistency across desktops, such as shared files or clipboard access, can be a challenge, and administrators may enforce policies to control resource use and access between desktops.

Common use cases include separating work and personal tasks, managing development environments, running incompatible software, classroom or kiosk deployments, and testing software in different desktop contexts.

There is no universal standard for multidesktop; the term describes a capability that overlaps with virtual desktops, desktop virtualization, and multi-user sessions. Implementations and terminology vary by platform and vendor.
