Modelsis

Modelsis is a term used in modeling and simulation to describe an open, interoperable framework for exchanging model definitions, simulation configurations, and result data between software tools. In this sense, modelsis aims to reduce vendor lock-in and enable cross‑domain collaboration by providing a common representation for computational models.

Etymology and scope: The name modelsis is a portmanteau of model and synthesis (or systems), reflecting its intended purpose as a unifying schema for building and sharing computational models across disciplines. It is not currently an official standard with formal governance, and implementations vary.

History and status: The concept gained attention in discussions on interoperability in the 2010s, with several proposals and experiments but no consensus standard achieved. In practice, related real-world standards such as the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) and SBML address parts of the problem, but do not constitute modelsis itself.

Design and features: A hypothetical modelsis specification would define a neutral data model for model structure, variables, units, parameters, experiments, and provenance metadata. It would specify serialization formats (for example XML or JSON), namespace conventions, and mechanisms for referencing external resources and simulation engines. Versioning and validation would be essential for adoption.

Impact and criticism: Proponents argue modelsis could streamline cross-tool workflows and reproducibility, while critics note the complexity of maintaining a universal schema and risk of fragmentation if multiple competing proposals emerge. In practice, interoperability is often achieved through adapters and partial standards rather than a single overarching model.
