Miljøsystem

Miljøsystem, or environmental management system, is a framework used to manage an organization’s environmental responsibilities in a structured, ongoing manner. It aims to minimize negative environmental impact while ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

A typical miljøsystem includes elements such as an environmental policy, identification of significant environmental aspects, setting objectives and targets, planning and operational controls, training and communication, documentation, monitoring and measurement, handling of nonconformities, audits, and management review. The approach emphasizes continuous improvement in environmental performance.

Standards and frameworks commonly used with a miljøsystem include ISO 14001, which specifies requirements for an environmental management system. In Europe, EMAS provides an additional level of external verification and public reporting. Many organizations also integrate a miljøsystem with other management systems, such as ISO 9001 for quality or ISO 45001 for health and safety, to create an integrated management approach.

Implementation typically covers all activities, products, and services within an organization, with attention to areas such as energy use, emissions, waste management, water consumption, materials procurement, and supplier practices. Lifecycle thinking, risk assessment, and setting measurable targets for improvement are common features.

Benefits of a well-implemented miljøsystem include improved legal compliance, reduced costs from more efficient resource use, enhanced stakeholder trust, and better risk management. Challenges can include initial investment, data collection needs, and maintaining sustained top-management commitment.
