Mikromeeter

Mikromeeter is a precision measuring instrument designed to determine small dimensions with high accuracy. It blends a traditional micrometer screw mechanism with electronic sensing and a digital readout, enabling rapid, repeatable measurements of features in the micrometer to sub-micrometer range. The instrument typically comprises a rigid frame, a sliding carriage with a calibrated spindle, an anvil and measuring faces, and an electronic sensor module that records displacement and communicates with a display or computing device.

Operation is similar to that of a standard micrometer: the workpiece is placed between the anvil and spindle, and the thimble is rotated to advance the spindle until contact is established; the sensor converts the position into a digital value. Some mikromeeters incorporate capacitive, inductive, or optical encoders to track motion, while others employ interferometric or laser-based subsystems for higher accuracy. Output interfaces often include USB, RS-232, or wireless connections, enabling data capture and integration with software for statistics, traceability, and calibration management.

Accuracy and calibration: basic models provide reliable measurements within a few micrometers, with higher-end devices achieving sub-micrometer resolution and improved accuracy when temperature compensation is applied. Calibration uses traceable artifacts such as gauge blocks or known standards, with performance checked at regular intervals according to established laboratory practice.

Applications and variants: mikromeeters are used in metrology labs, semiconductor fabrication, precision machining, and quality control in micro-manufacturing. Portable variants support field measurements, while benchtop units suit routine laboratory use.
