Mellanåldersskog refers to a forest stand in a specific stage of its development. It is a transitional phase that occurs after a forest has moved past its early, seedling-dominated years and before it reaches its mature, old-growth stage. This period is characterized by trees that have established a significant canopy and are growing in size and complexity, but have not yet attained the characteristics of ancient forests such as large diameter trees, extensive deadwood, or a highly varied vertical structure.

In a mellanåldersskog, the trees are generally of similar age, having originated from a common disturbance event like logging or a natural fire that cleared a previous forest. The forest floor may be less diverse than in older forests, with a more uniform understory. However, there is increasing competition among trees for light, water, and nutrients, leading to natural thinning as weaker individuals die off. This competition also promotes stronger growth in the remaining trees.
