Medieundervisning is an educational field that focuses on media literacy and critical engagement with media messages. It aims to equip learners with the skills to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media content, and to participate responsibly in a mediated information society. The field covers traditional and digital media, including television, newspapers, websites, social networks, video platforms, and podcasts. Core aims include developing critical thinking about media, understanding how media production works, and recognizing the economic and political forces shaping media content.

Key competencies include evaluating source credibility, detecting bias and misinformation, understanding ownership and business models of media organizations, recognizing advertising and propaganda techniques, and practicing safe and ethical digital citizenship. In addition, medieundervisning promotes practical media skills such as producing podcasts, video reports, or digital storytelling to reinforce analysis and communication.

Pedagogical approaches commonly used are inquiry-based and project-based learning, collaborative analysis of media texts, and student-created media projects. A reflective, discussion-based classroom climate is often emphasized to foster critical dialogue about representation, power, and agenda-setting.

Medieundervisning is integrated in many national curricula under media education, digital literacy, or information literacy objectives. It aligns with international frameworks such as UNESCO's media and information literacy (MIL) and the EU's DigComp competences. Challenges include keeping pace with fast-changing media environments, misinformation, unequal access to technology, and teacher training. When implemented effectively, medieundervisning supports informed citizenship, stronger media resilience, and responsible participation in digital society.
