MediaServer refers to software or a dedicated appliance that provides centralized storage and streaming of digital media to client devices over a local network or the Internet. It typically inventories media files such as movies, TV shows, music, and photos, and makes them available for playback on compatible devices.

Core functions include library organization, metadata retrieval, and presentation of content with cover art and descriptions. Most implementations support on-demand transcoding to adapt video and audio to the capabilities of the requesting device, network conditions, and user preferences.

Media servers often run on personal computers, network-attached storage devices, or purpose-built media appliances. They expose media through standard protocols such as DLNA/UPnP, HTTP-based streaming, RTSP, or WebDAV, and may offer a web-based interface for configuration and browsing.

Security and access control are typical considerations, with features such as user accounts, library permissions, and remote access controls. Transcoding can be CPU- or GPU-intensive, and performance depends on hardware, library size, and concurrent streams.

Several well-known software options exist, including Plex Media Server, Jellyfin, Emby, and Universal Media Server. Some are open source; others are proprietary or partially closed-source with commercial components. Many integrate with smart TVs, streaming devices, and mobile apps.
