It is applied in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, distribution centers, construction sites, mining and energy sectors. Efficient masshantering aims to minimize handling steps, avoid damage, and optimize space.

It relies on equipment such as cranes, hoists, forklifts, conveyors, automated storage and retrieval systems, pallets and containers, weigh scales and load cells, sensors and control software. Modern systems increasingly use automation, sensors and data analytics to track quantities, movement, and inventory in real time.

Key considerations include load capacity and center of gravity, stability, ergonomics, safety training, and compliance with occupational health and safety standards. Design and operation often use principles from material flow analysis, lean logistics, and safety standards to reduce risk and improve throughput.
