Mailcarrying refers to the act of transporting and delivering mail and packages to recipients, typically performed by postal workers or private carriers employed by postal or courier organizations. The term encompasses sorting, loading, transporting, and delivering mail along assigned routes, as well as handling outgoing mail and customer service tasks at delivery points.

In most postal systems, mailcarrying begins at a processing facility where mail is sorted by route and urgency. Carriers are assigned routes that determine the sequence of deliveries. On a daily shift, they sort mail, load bags and packages into a vehicle or carry on foot, and execute deliveries to homes and businesses. They may collect outgoing mail, pick up parcels, obtain recipient signatures for restricted items, and report undeliverable mail.

Equipment and technology include durable mailbags, postal uniforms, handheld scanning devices to update delivery status, vehicles or bicycles, and route navigation aids. Carriers follow safety protocols, privacy rules, and local regulations; they must handle fragile or valuable items securely, manage weather and traffic hazards, and protect recipients’ privacy.

Training and employment practices vary by country but generally require background checks and passing a postal examination or job screening. On-the-job training covers route procedures, safety, equipment use, and customer service. Working conditions differ by route and geography, often involving early hours, exposure to weather, and physical demands such as lifting and walking long distances. Some systems distinguish urban carriers from rural carriers who deliver to a wider area and serve PO boxes.

Impact and evolution: The rise of e-commerce has increased parcel volumes, while digitization has affected traditional letter mail volumes. Mailcarrying remains a core function of traditional postal services and is complemented by automated sorting and courier networks.
