A maastotietojärjestelmä, literally “terrain information system” in Finnish, is a type of geographic information system (GIS) focused on representing, storing, analyzing and visualizing spatial data related to the physical landscape. The system integrates data from various sources—such as topographic maps, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, LiDAR point clouds, and field surveys—into digital layers that can be overlaid, queried and modeled. Key components include data acquisition and preprocessing modules, a database that stores raster and vector information, a spatial analysis engine, and user interfaces for map creation and decision support. The underlying technology often employs coordinate reference systems, projection methods, and standards like ISO 19115 for metadata.
