MRIhen

MRIhen, short for magnetic resonance imaging with enhanced neural encoding, is a proposed multimodal imaging concept in medical imaging. It envisions combining high-field structural MRI with advanced functional and microstructural imaging, augmented by concurrent neural measurements and computational data fusion to produce integrated maps of anatomy and neural activity. The term appears in speculative and early-stage discussions and is not a widely adopted clinical modality.

Technique and components

Proposed implementations would use ultra-high-field scanners (7 T or higher), rapid imaging sequences for functional signals, diffusion and perfusion imaging for microstructure and hemodynamics, and noninvasive or invasive neural measurements. Data from these sources would be spatially aligned and fused using machine learning or statistical methods to generate high-resolution maps that link functional activity to precise anatomical structures.

Applications and potential advantages

Potential applications include basic neuroscience research, presurgical planning for epilepsy or tumor resection, and comprehensive cognitive neuroscience studies. Possible advantages over standard MRI include improved localization of functional signals, better differentiation of tissue types, and richer multimodal biomarkers that combine structure, function, and physiology in a single framework.

Limitations and status

As of now, MRIhen remains a conceptual or early-stage proposal rather than a standardized technique. Challenges include technical complexity, longer scan times, safety considerations at high magnetic fields, and the need for robust validation and regulatory approval.
