Microstructure refers to the arrangement and organization of a material’s internal features at length scales between the atomic and macroscopic, typically from nanometers to micrometers. It includes grains and grain boundaries, crystal orientations, phases and their distributions, precipitates, porosity, inclusions, and lattice defects such as dislocations. The microstructure is shaped by the material’s composition and its processing history, and it plays a central role in determining how a material behaves in use.

Common microstructural features include the size, shape, and orientation of grains; the presence and distribution of secondary phases; precipitate morphology; and the density of defects. In metals, for example, the grain structure and phase assemblages created during solidification, annealing, quenching, or tempering influence strength, hardness, toughness, and formability. Ceramic and polymer microstructures exhibit analogous relationships between phase distribution, porosity, and mechanical or thermal properties.

Microstructural analysis relies on techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and electron backscatter diffraction, often requiring careful sample preparation. Microstructure evolves with processing conditions, service temperatures, and mechanical history, making it a key lever in materials design.

In practice, understanding and controlling microstructure enables optimization of properties for specific applications, guiding decisions in alloying, heat treatment, processing, and quality control. The study of microstructure bridges fundamental science and engineering, linking microscopic features to macroscopic performance.
