MIDIohjain

MIDIohjain is a Finnish term that translates to MIDI controller. A MIDI controller is a hardware device or software program that outputs MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) data. This data can be used to trigger sounds on a MIDI-compatible instrument, sequence music, or control various musical parameters. Unlike a traditional musical instrument that produces sound directly, a MIDI controller acts as an interface, sending instructions to other devices.

Common types of MIDI controllers include keyboards, drum pads, and foot pedals. MIDI keyboards are perhaps the most prevalent, resembling traditional piano keyboards but generating MIDI messages instead of audible notes. Drum pads are often arranged in a grid and are used to trigger drum sounds or samples. Foot pedals can be used for tasks such as controlling volume, sustain, or other effects.

MIDI controllers connect to computers, synthesizers, or other electronic musical instruments via MIDI cables or USB. Software MIDI controllers exist within digital audio workstations (DAWs) and other music production software, allowing users to play virtual instruments or control parameters using their computer keyboard or mouse. The universality of the MIDI protocol allows for a wide range of interoperability between different devices and software from various manufacturers.
