MIDIkontrollerid, or MIDI controllers, are hardware devices that generate and transmit MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) data. MIDI is a communication protocol that allows electronic musical instruments, computers, and other related devices to connect and communicate with each other. Unlike audio interfaces, MIDI controllers do not produce sound themselves. Instead, they send information about musical events, such as which note was played, how hard it was pressed, and for how long.

These controllers come in various forms. The most common is a keyboard controller, resembling a piano keyboard, which sends note on/off messages, velocity (how hard a key is pressed), and pitch bend information. Other types include drum pads, which are often used for triggering drum sounds and samples, and dedicated controllers for specific software or hardware synthesizers. Many controllers also feature knobs, sliders, and buttons that can be mapped to control various parameters within music software or hardware, such as volume, filter cutoff, or effects.

The primary purpose of a MIDI controller is to provide an intuitive and expressive way to interact with electronic music creation tools. They bridge the gap between the physical world of playing an instrument and the digital realm of sound synthesis and sequencing. By sending MIDI data, controllers allow users to control synthesizers, samplers, digital audio workstations (DAWs), and other MIDI-compatible devices, enabling the creation and manipulation of music.
