MAPKERKpolku

MAPKERKpolku is a proposed cross-municipality trail network in Southern Finland designed to promote outdoor recreation, cultural heritage, and map literacy. The project contemplates a multi-use route suitable for pedestrians and cyclists, weaving through urban districts, parks, forests, and lakes, with connections to public transit and community facilities such as libraries and churches.

The name MAPKERKpolku is a compound word that reflects the route’s focus on maps (MAP) and walking paths (polku). Signage is intended to be bilingual where relevant and designed to be inclusive for families, visitors, and people with limited mobility. The route emphasizes wayfinding, digital mapping, and clear points of interest.

As of 2024, several pilot segments have been opened and tested, with work continuing on additional links to form a continuous network. Planned features include publicly accessible map kiosks, QR code markers with historical and logistical information, and integration with regional transit timetables.

Management and governance are handled by the involved municipalities in collaboration with cultural institutions and volunteer groups. The project aims to support sustainable mobility, local tourism, and community engagement, while offering educational opportunities related to cartography, local history, and regional planning.
