Lämpötulostuslaite, often translated as thermal printer, is a type of printer that works by heating a specially coated paper or a thermal transfer ribbon. The heat causes a chemical reaction in the paper or melts the ribbon, creating an image. This technology is commonly used in point-of-sale systems, receipt printers, and label makers.

There are two primary types of thermal printing. Direct thermal printing uses heat-sensitive paper. When heated by the thermal print head, the paper turns black, forming the image. This method is simple and cost-effective as it doesn't require ink or toner. However, the printed output can fade over time, especially when exposed to heat or direct sunlight.

The second type is thermal transfer printing. This method uses a thermal ribbon, typically made of wax or resin, that is melted by the print head and transferred onto a substrate, usually a label or paper. Thermal transfer printers offer more durable prints that are resistant to fading and abrasion, making them suitable for applications requiring long-lasting labels, such as shipping labels and product identification.

They are also compact, making them ideal for environments with limited space. The absence of ink cartridges or toner significantly reduces running costs.
