Lämpötulostuslaite, also known as a thermal printer, is a type of printer that uses heat to produce an image on heat-sensitive paper. This technology is commonly found in point-of-sale systems, receipt printers, and label makers. The printing process involves a thermal print head that contains many small heating elements. As the paper passes over the print head, specific elements are heated according to the image data. This heat causes a chemical reaction in the heat-sensitive coating of the paper, turning the heated areas black.

There are two main types of thermal printers: direct thermal and thermal transfer. Direct thermal printers, the most common type for receipts, use heat-sensitive paper directly. Thermal transfer printers, on the other hand, use a heated ribbon coated with wax or resin. The print head heats the ribbon, melting the ink onto the material being printed on, such as labels or durable tags. This method offers greater durability and resistance to fading compared to direct thermal printing.

The advantages of thermal printers include their quiet operation, speed, and relatively low maintenance costs due to the absence of ink cartridges or toner. However, the print quality can degrade over time, especially with direct thermal prints, as the paper is sensitive to heat, light, and abrasion.
