Lämpöstressiä refers to the physiological and behavioral responses of an organism to heat stress. It occurs when an animal's ability to dissipate heat is overwhelmed by the heat in its environment, leading to a rise in body temperature. This condition is particularly prevalent in livestock and poultry, impacting their health, productivity, and welfare.

Factors contributing to heat stress include high ambient temperatures, humidity, solar radiation, poor ventilation, overcrowding, and the animal's metabolic rate. For instance, animals that are actively growing or producing milk generate more internal heat, making them more susceptible.

The physiological effects of heat stress are varied. Animals may experience increased respiration rates, panting, and sweating (if applicable) in an attempt to cool down. They may also exhibit reduced feed intake, decreased water consumption, and changes in behavior such as seeking shade or cooler areas. In severe cases, heat stress can lead to dehydration, cardiovascular and respiratory distress, impaired immune function, and even death.

Economically, heat stress can result in reduced weight gain in meat animals, decreased milk production in dairy cows, lower egg production in poultry, and reduced reproductive efficiency across species. Managing heat stress is therefore crucial for agricultural sustainability and animal welfare.

Mitigation strategies include providing adequate shade, access to clean drinking water, improving ventilation in housing, and adjusting feeding practices. In some cases, cooling systems like misters or fans may be employed. Understanding the thresholds and impacts of heat stress helps producers implement effective management practices to protect their animals.
