Lämpöpussis

Lämpöpussis, often translated as "heat bag" or "hot pack," is a reusable thermal comfort product widely used in Finland and other Nordic countries. These devices are typically filled with a non-toxic gel or a mixture of water and salt, which can be heated and then retain their warmth for an extended period.

The primary function of a lämpöpussis is to provide localized warmth, offering relief from cold temperatures or muscular aches and pains. They are commonly used to warm beds before sleep, to alleviate discomfort during outdoor activities in winter, or as a therapeutic tool for muscle soreness, cramps, or menstrual pain.

Heating methods for a lämpöpussis vary depending on the type. Many are designed to be heated in boiling water or a microwave oven, following specific instructions to avoid damage. Once heated, the lämpöpussis is usually enclosed in a fabric cover to prevent direct contact with the skin, which could cause burns, and to diffuse the heat more evenly.

The gel inside most modern lämpöpussis is usually a mixture of water, a thickening agent, and a salt that lowers the freezing point, allowing it to remain flexible even when cold. When heated, the gel absorbs and stores thermal energy, releasing it slowly as it cools. This makes them a popular and eco-friendly alternative to disposable chemical heat packs. Their reusability and low cost have contributed to their widespread adoption for personal comfort and pain relief.
