Luotsaus

Luotsaus is a Finnish term referring to the act of piloting a ship through hazardous or difficult waters. It involves a licensed pilot, known as a luotsi, boarding a vessel to guide it safely into or out of a port or along a specific navigational route. These pilots possess extensive knowledge of local waters, including depths, currents, tides, weather patterns, and potential hazards like submerged obstacles or narrow channels.

The primary purpose of luotsaus is to ensure the safety of the vessel, its crew, and the surrounding environment. Pilots are often employed in areas where navigation would be challenging for a ship's captain, particularly for large vessels like tankers or container ships, or in areas with complex waterways. Their expertise helps prevent groundings, collisions, and other accidents.

The luotsi typically boards the incoming vessel via a pilot boat or sometimes by helicopter. Once on board, they take command of the navigation, directing the ship's helmsman and engine room. For departing vessels, the luotsi guides them safely away from the port or shore. The services of a luotsi are often mandatory in certain pilotage areas, especially for foreign-flagged vessels or those carrying dangerous cargo. The training and licensing of luotsit are strictly regulated to maintain high standards of maritime safety.
