Luftstyrkan

Luftstyrkan, literally meaning “the air strength,” is a term used in several Nordic languages to denote the air force, the branch of a country’s armed forces responsible for aerial warfare and related operations. It encompasses the management of air power, aviation forces, and supporting infrastructure to project force and protect airspace.

Typical roles of luftstyrkan include achieving air superiority, conducting air-to-ground and air-to-sea operations, and performing strategic and tactical airlift. It also conducts reconnaissance and surveillance, provides air defense of national airspace, and supports land and maritime forces. In many contexts it carries out search and rescue, humanitarian aid, and disaster response, often in coordination with other services and allied forces.

An air force is usually organized into units such as fighter squadrons, transport and airlift units, helicopter detachments, training establishments, and maintenance and logistics commands. It operates from air bases and relies on air control centers, radar and command, control, and communications networks to plan and execute missions.
