Luftfartsmyndighet

Luftfartsmyndighet is the term used for a national authority responsible for civil aviation regulation and oversight. It is typically a government agency or a department within the transport ministry, and in some countries operates as an independent regulator. The exact structure varies by country, but the core purpose is to ensure the safety, security and efficiency of air travel.

Key responsibilities include safety regulation and enforcement, airworthiness certification of aircraft and components, and certification of airlines, maintenance organizations, training organizations, and air navigation service providers. The luftfartsmyndighet licenses and oversees pilots, air traffic controllers, and other aviation personnel; it certifies and supervises airports and air traffic management procedures; and it develops and enforces regulatory standards for operations, maintenance, and incident reporting. It may also address environmental compliance and consumer protection aspects related to air transport.

International alignment is a central feature. Luftfartsmyndigheter generally implement national laws in accordance with standards set by international bodies such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). In regional contexts, they may apply rules and guidance from regional authorities or blocs, for example through European Union aviation safety regulations administered by a regional regulator.
