Lowerlatency

Lowerlatency is a concept referring to the goal of reducing the time between an input event and the corresponding response in a computing or networked system. End-to-end latency measures the total delay from request initiation to result reception, and lowerlatency aims to minimize this delay to improve responsiveness and user experience across various applications.

Lowerlatency is especially important in interactive domains such as online gaming, cloud desktops, virtual reality, remote control, and financial trading, where even small delays can degrade performance or competitiveness. It also matters in industrial automation, real-time analytics, and other time-sensitive workloads where timely feedback is critical.

End-to-end latency consists of multiple components: propagation delay across physical links, transmission delay, processing delay in devices, and queuing delay within routers and software. Achieving lowerlatency involves reducing one or more of these factors without sacrificing throughput, reliability, or scalability.

Techniques associated with lowerlatency include architectural and network design choices such as edge computing and colocated services to shorten travel time, low-latency networking protocols, kernel bypassing, and hardware acceleration (for example, RDMA-enabled NICs and FPGAs). Software approaches include real-time operating systems, priority scheduling, efficient I/O paths, and precomputation, caching, and speculative execution to hide latency.

Latency is typically measured with end-to-end latency, round-trip time, and tail latency metrics (such as the 95th or 99th percentile). Diagnostic tools include ping, traceroute, iPerf, and packet capture. In practice, reducing latency involves trade-offs with throughput, cost, and power consumption, and achieving predictable latency at scale remains an area of ongoing development, including deterministic networking and adaptive congestion control.
