End-to-end is a term used to describe processes, communications, or protections that span the entire path from one endpoint to another, focusing on the complete journey from origin to destination. It is applied across computing, networking, security, software testing, and business operations to emphasize holistic coverage rather than isolated parts.

In networking and systems design, the end-to-end principle asserts that certain functionalities should be implemented at the endpoints rather than within the network core. This approach keeps networks simple and robust, while allowing endpoints to provide features such as reliability, correctness, and security through their own logic and protocols.

End-to-end encryption (E2EE) is a cryptographic method in which only the communicating endpoints possess the keys needed to decrypt messages. This prevents intermediaries, including servers, from reading the content. E2EE is common in secure messaging and some file transfer tools, though it relies on proper key management and can limit server-side features such as search, moderation, or metadata processing.

End-to-end testing refers to validating a complete workflow from start to finish to ensure the system behaves correctly for an end user. It tests the interaction of multiple components in real-world scenarios and complements unit and integration testing.

In business and operations, an end-to-end solution or process covers all steps from initial request to final delivery, aiming to reduce handoffs, improve transparency, and enhance efficiency. The term is widely used in software products, networking, security, and supply chain contexts.
