In interactive media, geolocation, maps, and archived place data may influence progression, while in film and television on-location scouting can inform set design and scene structure.

Mechanisms and forms may employ geolocation, mapping, GPS-triggered events, or environmental data to alter scenes, puzzles, or dialogue as users move through spaces. Locationdirected projects can be fully location-responsive or use a hybrid approach where the geography sets mood without dictating every turn, allowing creators to integrate real-world context with narrative or gameplay.

Applications span film, video games, augmented reality, education, and cultural heritage. Location-directed games may adapt puzzles to neighborhoods, or AR experiences may reveal different content in different areas. In cinema and TV, scripts and production plans may be organized around real-world geography to improve authenticity and logistics, while museums and cities can deploy location-tainted narratives that contextualize exhibits with nearby spaces.

History: The approach emerged with advances in geolocation technologies and mobile AR in the 2000s and 2010s. Early experiments in location-based storytelling evolved into more refined methods in game design, interactive documentaries, and place-based education.

Evaluation and concerns: Locationdirected can deepen immersion and local engagement but raises privacy and accessibility issues when real user location is involved and requires careful handling of data, bias toward certain places, and avoidance of geographic determinism.
