Lasteaias

Lasteaias is the Estonian term for a preschool educational institution that serves as a first step in children's formal education before primary school. The name translates roughly to "children's garden" and emphasizes early development through play, social interaction, and guided activities. Lasteaed programs typically cater to children in the toddler to early school-age range, commonly about three to seven years old.

Most lasteaiad in Estonia are run by municipalities, with private providers also operating in the sector. Funding generally comes from public sources, with parental fees applying for certain hours or for private or extended-care places. Attendance is voluntary and widely used by families as a means of childcare and early education. Some programs offer free hours or subsidies, depending on local policy.

The curriculum in a lasteaed focuses on holistic development rather than formal academics. Emphasis is placed on language and communication, social skills, physical development, creativity, early numeracy concepts, and environmental awareness. Learning is largely play-based and experiential, organized through daily routines, guided activities, group work, and outdoor time. Inclusive education and support for children with additional needs are common aims in many kindergartens.

A typical day in a lasteaed includes arrival, circle time, a mix of play and structured activities, meals, outdoor play, and rest or quiet activities for younger children. The program supports transitions to primary school by fostering routines, basic literacy and numeracy readiness, and familiarity with classroom environments and teacher-led activities.
