Laserleikattuja

Laserleikattuja is a Finnish term describing objects or components produced by laser cutting. The word combines laserleikkaus (laser cutting) with the plural form -ttuja, and refers to items shaped and separated along precise vector paths by a laser, resulting in clean, intricate edges.

The process starts with a digital design from CAD or vector software (SVG, DXF). The laser cutter converts the design into machine instructions and guides the beam along the cut lines. Material choice determines the laser type and settings: CO2 lasers for wood, acrylic, leather and many plastics; fiber lasers for metals. Key parameters include power, speed, focus, and kerf, which affect edge quality and thickness. Proper tuning reduces scorching and rough edges.

Common materials include wood, plywood, acrylic, cardboard, leather and textiles, and certain polymers. Metals require higher-powered systems and gas assist. Applications include architectural models, signage, packaging prototypes, furniture components, jewelry and decorative art. Laser-cut parts enable complex geometries, internal cutouts and repeatable production.

Advantages include high precision, repeatability and reduced post-processing for many materials, enabling rapid prototyping. Limitations involve material restrictions, kerf width, heat-affected zones, fumes, and higher equipment costs for small runs. Designers should consider tolerances, material behavior under heat, and ventilation needs.

Safety and environmental considerations include ventilation and fume extraction, machine guarding, eye protection, and proper waste handling. Some plastics release hazardous fumes when cut, and care is required to prevent fire and smoke.
