Lappfläns

Lappfläns, literally “Sámi fringe,” is a traditional decorative element found on Sámi clothing and textiles in the Nordic regions and the Kola Peninsula. The feature appears as fringed or tasselled edges added along hems, sleeves, belts, or along the seams of garments such as the gákti. It may be composed of wool, leather strips, or woven bands, and is often attached in rows or panels.

In historical sources, lappfläns served both decorative and practical purposes, offering extra warmth and a display of regional or clan identity. The style, length, color, and arrangement of lappfläns vary among Sámi groups, for example the Northern Sámi, Inari Sámi, and Skolt Sámi, with typical color schemes including blue, red, green, or natural wool tones. The patterns and materials can reflect local resources and craft techniques, such as braiding, tablet weaving, or cutting from leather.

Today, lappfläns are preserved in museums, featured in demonstrations of traditional Sámi dress, and sometimes integrated into contemporary Sámi fashion. The term appears in ethnographic literature; however, terminology evolves, and “Sámi fringe” or simply “fringe” is often used in modern context. The careful use of language is recommended, as the historical term lapp/lappish is considered outdated by some communities.
