Kütusetarbimist is the Estonian term for fuel consumption, a metric used to quantify the amount of fuel used by a vehicle or other machinery per unit of distance or time. It is commonly expressed in liters per 100 kilometres (L/100 km) in European countries, while North American contexts tend to employ miles per gallon (mpg). The metric is essential for assessing vehicle efficiency, operating costs, and environmental impact.

Fuel consumption can be measured under a variety of conditions, including real-world driving, laboratory simulations, or standardized drive cycles such as the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) or the older New European Driving Cycle (NEDC). These laboratory tests attempt to replicate typical driving conditions to provide comparable data across models and manufacturers.

In practical terms, lower fuel consumption values indicate higher efficiency. Variables influencing consumption include vehicle weight, aerodynamics, engine technology, transmission type, driver behaviour, tyre pressure, and external factors such as terrain and weather. Hybrid and electric vehicles usually display values expressed in energy per kilometre rather than fuel quantity.

Regulatory bodies and automotive associations use fuel consumption figures to shape emissions standards, tax brackets, and consumer information programs. Consumers often consider fuel consumption when purchasing vehicles, as it impacts running costs and ecological footprint. Reducing consumption through technological advances, improved driving habits, or alternative fuels remains a key component of transport sector sustainability initiatives.
