The aim is to reach a position where the animal is within effective range and presents a suitable angle for a clean shot, typically broadside or quartering away. The method requires patience, quiet movement, careful observation, and the ability to read signs of animal activity.

Typical equipment includes a suitable rifle or bow, camouflage or muted clothing, and optics for distance estimation and target confirmation. Hunters may use scents, calls, or blinds selectively, but the emphasis is on stealth and a slow, side-on approach.
