Kõhurasvumust

Kõhurasvumust, often referred to as abdominal obesity or central obesity, describes the excessive accumulation of fat in the abdominal region. This condition is distinct from generalized obesity where fat is distributed more evenly throughout the body. It is characterized by an increase in waist circumference, which can be measured using a tape measure.

The accumulation of abdominal fat is primarily linked to lifestyle factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, a diet high in processed foods and sugars, and insufficient physical activity. Genetics can also play a role in an individual's predisposition to storing fat in the abdominal area. Stress and lack of sleep are also increasingly recognized as contributing factors.

Abdominal obesity is a significant health concern because visceral fat, the fat surrounding internal organs in the abdomen, is metabolically active. It releases inflammatory substances and hormones that can negatively impact the body's functions. This increased risk is associated with a higher likelihood of developing serious health problems.

Conditions strongly linked to kõhurasvumust include type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure (hypertension), and certain types of cancer. It can also contribute to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Managing kõhurasvumust typically involves lifestyle modifications. This includes adopting a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, while reducing intake of saturated fats, added sugars, and refined carbohydrates. Regular physical activity, encompassing both aerobic exercise and strength training, is crucial. Weight loss, even a modest amount, can significantly improve health markers associated with abdominal obesity.
