Käyttäytymisanalyysiä, often translated as behavior analysis, is a scientific approach to understanding and changing behavior. It is based on the principles of behaviorism, particularly the work of B.F. Skinner. The core idea is that behavior is learned through interactions with the environment.

The fundamental principles of behavior analysis include reinforcement, punishment, extinction, and shaping. Reinforcement increases the likelihood of a behavior occurring again, while punishment decreases it. Extinction occurs when a previously reinforced behavior is no longer rewarded, leading to its decline. Shaping involves reinforcing successive approximations of a desired behavior.

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a specific application of these principles to address socially significant behaviors, such as those seen in individuals with autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, or behavioral challenges. ABA interventions are individualized and data-driven, meaning that progress is systematically measured and the intervention is adjusted based on the results.

The process typically involves identifying a target behavior, assessing the environmental factors that influence it (antecedents and consequences), developing an intervention plan, implementing the plan, and continuously monitoring and evaluating its effectiveness. Behavior analysts use various assessment methods and intervention techniques to help individuals acquire new skills and reduce problematic behaviors. The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for the individual by promoting positive behavioral changes.
