Käiguvahetuslukustuse

Käiguvahetuslukustus, commonly known by its English equivalent "shift interlock," is a safety feature found in most modern automatic transmissions and some automated manual transmissions. Its primary purpose is to prevent the vehicle from being accidentally shifted out of the Park position unless certain conditions are met, thereby reducing the risk of unintended vehicle movement.

The most common requirement for disengaging the shift interlock is to have the vehicle's brake pedal depressed. This ensures that the driver is present and in control of the vehicle before allowing a change in gear selection. When the brake pedal is pressed, a signal is sent to the transmission control module, which then allows the shift lever to be moved from Park to Reverse, Neutral, or Drive.

In some vehicles, there may be additional interlock mechanisms. For instance, the ignition switch might need to be in the "ON" or "RUN" position. This prevents the transmission from being shifted while the engine is off and the vehicle is unattended, further enhancing safety.

The physical implementation of the shift interlock system can vary. It often involves a solenoid that physically blocks the movement of the shift lever. When the correct conditions are met, the solenoid is de-energized, releasing the lock. In cases of electrical failure or a dead battery, a manual override mechanism, often a small slot or button near the shift lever, allows the driver to disengage the interlock and shift the transmission, usually with the help of a tool like a key or screwdriver. This override should only be used in emergency situations.
