Kruisbandreconstructies are surgical procedures to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in the knee. These ligaments are crucial for knee stability, preventing excessive forward or backward movement of the tibia relative to the femur. Tears typically occur during sports or accidents involving sudden stops, pivots, or direct impact.

The surgery involves replacing the torn ligament with a graft. This graft can be harvested from the patient's own body (autograft), usually from the hamstring tendons, patellar tendon, or quadriceps tendon. Alternatively, a graft can come from a deceased donor (allograft). The choice of graft depends on various factors, including the patient's age, activity level, and surgeon's preference.

The procedure is generally performed arthroscopically, using small incisions and a camera to guide the instruments. The surgeon drills tunnels in the tibia and femur, through which the graft is passed and secured with screws or other fixation devices. Rehabilitation is a critical component following surgery, involving pain management, regaining range of motion, strengthening exercises, and eventually a return to sport-specific activities. Recovery timelines vary but often take several months to a year. Not all ACL or PCL tears require surgical reconstruction; conservative management with physical therapy may be sufficient for less active individuals or those with partial tears.
