Krampuslauf
Krampuslauf refers to organized parades in which participants dress as Krampus, a horned, demon-like figure from Alpine folklore, and move through streets during the Advent season. The figure is traditionally paired with Saint Nicholas, who rewards good children while Krampus punishes the naughty. The term means “Krampus run” or “Krampus procession.”
Origins and regional spread: The Krampus figure stems from pre-Christian Alpine traditions and was later integrated
Practice and appearance: Participants wear fur suits, masks with horns and other frightening features, often accompanied
Timing and cultural context: Krampusnacht, on December 5, marks the main day for Krampus activities, with runs
In modern times Krampuslauf functions as both living folklore and a tourist attraction, reflecting regional identity
