Korrupes

Korrupes is a small, nocturnal insect-native species that is endemic to the misty highland forests of the Sulian Plateau. Adult korrupes measure roughly 12 to 15 millimetres in length, with a slender exoskeleton that is dark green to black in coloration, providing camouflage against bark and leaf litter. Their forewings are covered in fine, iridescent scales that create a subtle glow when illuminated by moonlight. A distinctive feature of the species is the pair of bioluminescent organs located near the forelegs, which are used during courtship displays.

In terms of behavior, korrupes are primarily solitary, with the exception of mating seasons. They feed on a variety of organic matter, including fungal hyphae, decaying leaf matter, and occasionally the nectar of low-lying flowers. Their life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis pattern, with egg, larval, pupal and adult stages. The larval stage lasts between 2 to 3 weeks before pupation. Adult korrupes are most active between late summer and early fall, coinciding with the period of abundant fungal growth.

Korrupes plays an important ecological role in nutrient cycling. The larvae accelerate the decomposition of leaf litter, enhancing soil fertility. Predators such as small birds, monitor lizards and invertebrate predators like beetles rely on korrupes as a food source. Although the species is not currently listed on any major conservation status lists, its specialized habitat makes it vulnerable to forest fragmentation and the spread of invasive plant species. Conservation efforts that focus on preserving undisturbed forested areas and maintaining native plant diversity are essential for the continued viability of korrupes populations.
